Assignment for Wednesday, Feb. 7

The correspondence theory of truth claims that a belief is true when it matches a fact that is external to the belief itself. In othe words it must match something in the external world. If this is correct, you should be able to identify some "fact" in the world that would show whether any belief is true and know where one can locate that fact.

Assume each of the following eight beliefs are true. In one or two sentences, 1) state what “fact” would have to be found in the world for these beliefs to be true, and 2) explain where a person can find the "fact"

  1. Murder is wrong.

 

  1. It cannot be hot and cold at the same time in the same place.

 

  1. When a person hits a nail with a hammer, it causes the nail to go into a piece of wood.

 

  1. Bachelor means the same thing as unmarried male.

 

  1. A rock is as it appears to me.

 

  1. It is possible that it might snow tomorrow.

 

  1. God exists.

 

  1. It is just to put a guilty person in person even if it does not reform him.
